There are days when everything feels manageable. You can think clearly, respond to what’s in front of you, and move through your work without it feeling overwhelming.
Then there are other days where that same level of demand feels completely different. You might notice yourself getting more reactive than usual, feeling overstimulated by things that normally wouldn’t bother you, or going in the opposite direction and struggling to stay engaged at all.
It can feel inconsistent, especially when the external circumstances haven’t changed very much.
What’s often happening in those moments has less to do with the situation itself and more to do with where you are operating in relation to your window of tolerance.
Your window of tolerance is the range where your nervous system is regulated enough for you to function effectively. Within that range, you’re able to process information, stay present, and respond with a level of control.
Once you move outside of it, your experience starts to shift.
For some people, that looks like increased activation. Things feel urgent, overwhelming, or harder to manage. For others, it shows up as a kind of shutdown, where energy drops and engagement becomes more difficult.
Neither of these responses are random.
They are part of how the body adapts when it moves outside of a state where it feels stable.
The challenge is that most people don’t recognize when that shift is happening in real time. They experience the outcome, like frustration, anxiety, or disconnection, without realizing that their nervous system has already moved outside of its optimal range.
That’s why it can feel like something is wrong, when in reality something has just shifted.
Understanding your window of tolerance doesn’t mean you’ll stay perfectly regulated all the time.
It means you start to notice when you’re moving out of that range sooner, which gives you more options for how to respond. Instead of being fully inside the reaction, you begin to see it as it’s happening.
That awareness is what allows you to come back, rather than feeling stuck in it.
